Wants VS Needs

First-time homeowners often get caught up in the excitement of owning their own home and strive for perfection, envisioning their dream home. However, when they begin the process of finding an interior designer (ID), reality sets in, and they realize that many of their desired improvements are either impractical or exceed their budget. Consequently, first-time homeowners often experience disappointment during their search for an ID, as many of their ideas are deemed unfeasible. In truth, striving to fulfill every want in a first house may not be advisable for several reasons:
1. Investment: Considering the possibility of selling the house after a few years, such as in the case of Build-To-Order (BTO) owners, it becomes clear that prioritizing excessive desires may not be a wise decision. Often, selling after a few years allows for significant appreciation in value, particularly if one moves to a more desirable location. Therefore, it is prudent to view the first house as a testing phase to understand one’s true wants and needs, with the intention of making more informed decisions for subsequent homes.
2. Experience: As first-time homeowners, lacking experience in evaluating houses and working with IDs leaves them vulnerable to potential pitfalls. There is the risk of overspending on renovations that fail to meet expectations or encountering unanticipated defects in the property post-renovation. By keeping costs low and gaining experience firsthand, homeowners can better navigate the renovation process and make more informed decisions when working with IDs in the future.
3. Budget: First-time homeowners typically have limited savings compared to those who have been in the workforce for decades. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize efficiency and practicality while maintaining aesthetic appeal within budget constraints. A skilled ID can work wonders within a limited budget, providing effective recommendations while ensuring the final design meets the homeowner’s vision.
In summary, while it is natural to desire perfection in one’s first home, it is important for first-time homeowners to temper their expectations and prioritize practicality, experience, and budget considerations to ensure a successful and fulfilling renovation journey
